Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC) has reached an agreement with Union Pacific providing a commitment of job security for all BRC members employed by both Union Pacific or Norfolk Southern at the time the railroads merge, ensuring these employees will have a job opportunity for the remainder of their career. This protection secures hundreds of good-paying railroad jobs and demonstrates an opportunity to both expand business and provide additional job opportunities in the future.
The parties also agree to work together to reach timely implementing agreements that will determine any overall impact on the current workforce and operation as a result of the merger. This agreement reflects a commitment to prioritizing the needs of our members and their families. This commitment provides a strong foundation for us to continue to build on in the days ahead as the merger process develops.
“Security for our members is a huge accomplishment. I am proud to report that BRC members working at UP and NS can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing your job is secure and that you don’t have to worry about being involuntarily furloughed,” said Don Grissom, General President, BRC. “UP leadership did the right thing in taking this important first step for our members. I look forward to working with them on the next steps as we negotiate and implement the agreement. I also want to thank National Representative Greg Burnett for his assistance in reaching this agreement. This makes BRC the first mechanical craft to reach an agreement guaranteeing job protection for shop craft employees, and our members can count on BRC to continue to lead the way.”
